- Geological - An extinct group of marine animals. Members of the phylum Cephalopoda. They closely resemble the modern Nautilus, but their closest living relative is probably the octopus, squid & cuttlefish. They first appeared 300 million years ago. Their fossil shells usually take the form of spirals, there are also helically spiraled and non-spiraled forms as well. The animal that lived in these shells looked something like a squid or an octopus, with tentacles for grasping it’s food and moving around the ocean floor. Varying in size, coin size up to six feet. It is speculated that they ate Trilobite & other small animals. Preserved forever as the original structure has been replaced by minerals.
