  • Geological - A precious metal. Michigan’s Keweenaw Peninsula is one of the most important localities in the world for pure native copper. Mining began 1845 & continued until 1968. Rock-hunters still consider this area a primary source for specimens. Long before the mining of the past century in Keweenaw, pre-historic peoples mined copper from the mineral-rich veins. Copper Ore is native copper with occurring rock matrix. Matrix color may be green (epidote), red (conglomerate), white (quartz), or brown (basalt).
