Anasazi Pottery Fragment
- Geological - Around A.D. 800 the Anasazi are thought to have began making crude pottery which eventually evolved into a much more sophisticated craft. The ancient Anasazis built flourishing civilizations throughout the SW USA, where they lived for centuries until they mysteriously vanished. They left behind a legacy rich in art, agriculture, and complex astronomy, as well as many tangible signs that they once were here. Cliff dwellings and village ruins, filled with petroglyphs, pottery shards, stone tools, offer fascinating insight into the region’s earliest highly cultured people, who lived off the land. From CO Mesa Verde to AZ Canyon de Chelly, UT Grand Gulch and NM Chaco Canyon, the Anasazi built their mud homes in valleys, canyons, and the sides of towering cliffs. Anasazi is a Navajo word that translates into English as meaning "enemy ancestor". The Hopi people are believed to be the modern descendants of the Anasazi.
